Great Joy

Luke 2:10 (ESV) “I bring you good news of GREAT JOY…”

Mark 1:1-3 (NIV) The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “I will send my messenger ahead of you,  who will prepare your way”— “a voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’”

Matthew 2:10 (ESV) When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.

John 1:1-5 (ESV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Isaiah 40:5 (NIV) “And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

Isaiah 40:9 (ESV) Go on up to a high mountain,     O Zion, herald of good news; lift up your voice with strength,     O Jerusalem, herald of good news;      lift it up, fear not; say to the cities of Judah,      “Behold your God!”

Luke 2:8-15 (ESV) And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,     “Glory to God in the highest,          and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.”

Luke 2:20 (ESV) And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen as it had been told to them

What is Great Joy?

Luke 2:1 (ESV) In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.

Micah 5:2 (ESV) But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah,     who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me     one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old,     from ancient days.

1 Corthians 1:25-29 (ESV) For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.

Isaiah 55:8-9 (ESV) For my thoughts are not your thoughts,     neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth,     so are my ways higher than your ways     and my thoughts than your thoughts.
